To answer your question, no I have not given up on the Buffy Rewatch. I'm just taking a break to burn through Veronica Mars before the movie comes out. I DO WHAT I WANT!
Anyway!
It's Power Ballad Thursday here on the blog you're reading!
Let's listen to The Preternders. And admire Chrissie Hynde's patriotic star t-shurt!
I'm pretty sure this video is about addiction? I dunno. This guy she's hanging on seems jittery. And then he takes off his shirt. But she stands by him! And mends his shirt! and blocks out the sun from him.
THEN THERE IS A COCKROACH ON IT'S BACK.
And okay, now he seems dead.
Oh, good, he's not. He's just almost dead. But she keeps putting water on him. I think it symbolizes holy water. Totally. But not really.
Whatever, this addict guy has beautiful hair and isn't dead at the end of the video. He's just unconscious. And that's okay! Because eventually he'll get better and leave her! It's cool guys!
Man, there's something off about the way my brain works.
Having Monday off from work makes me forget what day of the week it is.
But I'll tell you right now, it's Thursday.
And you know what that means! It's #PBT!
It also means that I'm just crazy exhausted. So I asked my coworker what song to write about and share with y'all. And he said "Metallica". I will tell you this right now, listening to Metallica power ballads is not waking me up. Mainly because they intro for over a minute on each song. And I fall asleep a little more each time.
So here's Metallica, with "Nothing Else Matters". Taking forever to get started. Putting me in a trance for 1:00 exactly until they start actually singing. And also, they play instruments with nude pictures near them. Which I find so weird.
at least they blurred it?
But they also have some serious facial hair in this video. So serious. What a montage. Give it a listen.
Then go and listen to something more upbeat so you can wake the eff up.
Okay, guys, tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Some people love it, some people hate it. Very few people are indifferent about it.
I happen to LOVE it.
Who would have guessed that? (everyone) I mean, I love a good theme. So, a holiday built around a color scheme and design aesthetic is just right in my wheelhouse.
Anyway, back to the music!
This music video features the scariest bed I've ever seen in my entire life. It's made of iron and is totally scary. It's got these spikes that could just kill you. It also features some of the most quintessential 90s fashion choices I've seen. Florals. Fuzzy shirts.
But that music!! I'm sorry haters but Celine Dion can SANG.
This is the time of year where I'm too cold to lead an interesting life or write about things and end up just doing nothing. Which is ridiculous because I've actually done a lot this month. But I'm just too cold to type it up! Or take pictures!
But not cold enough to make excuses! HEYO!
Anyway, it's Power Ballad Thursday, y'all!
Let's kick it into gear!
I don't know if this actually qualifies as a power ballad. But it was on a Power Ballad List so I'm including it. But really, it's not. WHATEVER.
Because it's so sexy. And the guy in the video (the non Joe Cocker guy) looks like Logan Echolls from Veronica Mars. Oof.
There are like NO good photos of this guy.
I wish they would just remake this video with Logan Echolls stipping. I'd like it more.
Also, this video made me paranoid to watch it at work. So there's that. But it's got horns. Horns are sexy.
If I could, I'd just play the Sanford and Sons theme song everytime I think about how sexy horns are. Because THAT is a sexy jam.
I shouldn't say "sexy" so much in one post...Oh well!
Wait! No one's wearing a fucking hat at any point in this video. I feel like this was a missed opportunity.
If I'm being 100% honest, I had never seen this video until today. And I was a little concerned that it'd be all just a closeup on Phil's face for 5 minutes.
And yes, that's a good majority of the video (and why is it blurry?). But then there's a storyline in there. And it's weird as shit.
He's staring at the moon. And he's staring at himself. And he's opening doors. And he's full of bright colors all of a sudden. Instead of black and white. (but he fades back to black and white).
That being said, I do love this chick's style. (Upon further reasearch her name is Marie). She performs barefoot and wears bodycon dresses. And her hair is perfect. I love her. I want to be her.
Also, this band is apparently Swedish which makes sense because I was going to say how much this girl Marie reminds me of Robyn. Like, I'm sure they're related or something.
Is it crazy snowy where you guys are btw? Because it is here and I'm not loving it. If only because I had to wear my serious hat and it gave me hat hair.
Okay, the original reason that I picked this song (other than it being awesome) is because in college, we had a hamster with giant balls. And we searched for info on hamsters and illness and found this site full of hamster info that had a midi file of November Rain playing. So I can't hear it without laughing about hamster balls.
I'm a grown up.
But NOW....now I'm insane. I've watched the video like 3 times this morning. I got roped into the story.
First there's this trashy (and amazing) wedding dress. AND THEN (spoilers) the bitch is dead. After this big rain storm during the reception.
Originally, I thought she died of pneumonia. Because it was just so rainy.
But then it looked like people were jumping out of the way like there was a shooter at the reception during the rainstorm. Mainly, one guy jumped THROUGH the wedding cake. Which seems extreme for just getting out of a rain storm.
Cut to - funeral. Where there's a partition down the casket with a mirror reflecting half her face to make it look like she's got a normal face. So, something (gun shot) happened to her.
THESE ARE THE THINGS I SCREEN CAP
And then I read that the video was based on a short story by Del James (Axl's friend) about a blues musician who's ex shot her self. Which implies that the bride shot herself. There was like 1 seen where she looked sad in the car...I guess that she could be depressed.
And also, Slash walked out of the wedding to play an emotional solo in the desert. So maybe he loved her. And maybe she killed herself at the thought of being with Axl forever instead of Slash (sounds right to me). Or maybe Slash killed her during the reception. Is he at the funeral? I'll rewatch and tell you. He was at the funeral. So he didn't kill her.
I mean....come on
I'm sticking with suicide. It's the most plausible.
How is it only Thursday? What am I doing with my life?
Oh, hello there! I may have taken an accidental blog break while I went to NYC last weekend. OOPS! My bad! But I'm back! And I have a young, shirtless Tommy Lee with me. You're welcome.
I picked this song for 2 reasons.
1. It's a power ballad. Which is required of #PBT. Duh.
2. I'm excited to be home! I accidentally scheduled a little too much travel from November through January. And it's stressful (and FUN!).
Plus, just look at Vince Neil pre VH1 surgery show. He's wearing really tight suit-shorts. It's hilarious:
Hope your week has been great! I'll share pictures of NYC soon.
I will admit that until I watched this video just now I had no idea what Bryan Adams looked like. And that makes sense because he's got a pretty generic look to him.
But the video has a story about being a drunk driver. And that's important and stuff.
Anecdote time! When I was in like...early high school and Napster was big I would just download everything that gave me feels. And Bryan Adams and that raspy voice just really hit home. And I have no idea why. Remember when there was a club remix of this song though? Well my BFF at the time and I would just adamantly demand that Bryan Adams was way better.
I think we just wanted to be different. Not in a cool way. Just a different way.
see. this bitch didn't know what he looked like either!
This PBT is brought to you by my sister in law, Kat, who brought it to my attention. It's just so beautiful.
Not only is this an epic ballad, but it's a great video. Which is apparently a requirement for PBT now. This guy has BANGS. There's a shootout and some black and white. What more could you ask for?
See! BANGS!!!
Anytime a guy is wearing a vest with no shirt or a sleeveless mock turtleneck you just know that fashion history is being made.
So, thanks Kat! What a great addition to Power Ballad Thursday!
I realize now that I might have a problem. That problem is Bon Jovi.
They are just...amazing with power ballads. and hair.
Also, this video is amazing. Felicity is in it (in a green shiny bra). There's something about a power ballad that requires the video to be a story. Like, the srory here is about a couple cheating on each other and having long hair. It's pretty good.
Plus, Jon Bon Jovi makes this face:
Do you have any suggestions for future #PBTs? Let me know!
xoxo
Amanda
Why don't bands make amazing videos like this anymore?!?
Either way, this week's Power Ballad is Celine Dion. And I can't help it. I love Celine. She's a serious powerhouse vocalist. And she likes smoke machines. And ghosts. And just. watch. the. video.
I had a very Power Ballad heavy morning today. I blame the fact that A) I was stressed out and B) No one was chatting with me on line so I felt compelled to tweet lyrics on line.
It was a great way to start my day.
Anyway, today's sponsored Power Ballad is from Meatloaf. And it's a classic. And the video is EPIC.
When I was a kid, my brother actually owned this cd. It felt really cool to get to say "hell" whenever referencing it.
Hell, hell, hell.
Also, I get to share my favorite food with a face doodle. Which is always fun. This is my art style. It's the best work I do. Inanimate objects with faces.
Welcome to another edition of Power Ballad Thursday (#PBT).
This week you get the amazing song "To Be With You" from Mr. Big.
So, flashback. Last summer Jessica was visiting and she and Kelly and I were in a cab and asked the guy to turn on the radio. He did, and this song started blasting. It's just one of those absolutely perfect memories.
Singing along in a car with your boofs. I love it.
Yesterday, my good buddy Sam told me that her boss used to play power ballads in their office really loud on Thursdays. Doesn't that sound AMAZING? So, we decided to embrace it ourselves and share some great music to get you through a Thursday.
Power Ballad Thursday (or #PBT for you Twitter folks) starts now. LET'S DO THIS GUYS!
My share this week comes to you all the way from New Jersey. It's Bon Jovi, y'all! I really love this song. So get on board!
Share your favorites!
(Excessive exclamation marks are required for #PBT apparently)
